Teaching English Abroad

By Charlotte Lees

Travelling is a dream for many people, but unfortunately in some situations it appears to be an unrealistic dream mainly due to the financial implications of taking this type of trip. One great way to really explore the world is by travelling and working at the same time and if you are considering doing this then working as a TEFL teacher can be a great career choice for you. On top of teaching children to speak English, you will be able to realise your dream of working in an overseas environment.

If you are looking to kick start your travelling dream then undertaking a TEFL course can be a great way to start and for many people it seems like a good trade-off. Unfortunately, many people are daunted by what they believe to be an often long and complicated process of training to become a TEFL teacher and this can be daunting to people who consider this as a career path.

In order to become a fully qualified TEFL teacher, you need to undertake a course and become fully accredited. There are a number of different courses that you can undertake to do this but in general they are only short courses, usually two or three days so you can easily complete them over a weekend which can fit in nicely if you have a regular job during the week.

The courses comprise of a whole range of different topics and they teach you not only how to prepare effective lesson plans, but also how to work with your students and to produce effective learning techniques which allow them to learn quickly and effectively.

At the completion of your course you will be presented with a range of different teaching opportunities that you may choose to take up, depending on where you are looking to travel and the type of job that you are hoping to undertake. These posts can range in time from just a few months to a longer period of time for people who might want to travel more.
