Refugee Offshoring Back On The Table

The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship believes that it is better for the refugees if he keeps them out of Australia and processes their claims overseas.

Minister Chris Bowen told Fran Kelly In an interview with ABC National Radio's Breakfast program on May 22 that offshoring is "the better system" to deal with this type of migration - and may even encourage more people to come to Australia.

Many refugees find the cost of people smuggling prohibitive, he explained, while those who do take the risk may also run into trouble on the water - which in some cases can result in deaths at sea.

Mr. Bowen argues that a better solution would therefore be to process the asylum seekers out of the country and then to let them in for resettlement.

"I was in a refugee camp talking to refugees in India a couple of weeks ago, who wouldn't have dreamed of having the money to pay a people smuggler; and some of them deserve a better chance of resettlement in Western countries including Australia at the moment," Bowen said.

The Minister thinks offshoring would reduce the people smugglers from profiteering from the misery of the lives of other humans.

The message this would send, he explained, is that those who choose to travel to Australia by boat may run the risk of being permanently re-settled to another country instead. "You're not going to get the product you're after," he told Kelly.

On Monday, Bowen and minister for home affairs Jason Clare announced in a joint statement that since Tony Abbot rejected government plans for offshore processing, 37 boats carrying asylum seekers have arrived in Australia.

And until the problem can be adequately resolved by Labor and the Coalition, more boats will keep on coming - which means people will continue to put their lives at risk to travel illegally to Australia.

Clare highlighted that this type of illegal immigration has an unfortunate human cost.

"Remember what this is all about," he said, pointing out that in 2011, some 200 people died off the coast of Indonesia, with 11 more losing their lives off the coast of Malaysia.

Clare added: "We can stop people risking their lives ... it shouldn't take another 200 people to die before Mr Abbot agrees to pass the legislation.

An HR degree is the straightest way to the top if you're gunning for an executive position. Hiring managers will consider you a perfect fit because you're already equipped for the job. You shouldn't be disheartened if you've taken on a related degree, though. You can use it to apply to industries that benefit from your specialization.

HR jobs are always in demand, but positions are often filled as quickly as they show up. Only well-qualified candidates ever make it to the higher executive positions, so you shouldn't settle for your current qualifications if you want to scale the corporate ladder. Certification solidifies your credentials, especially if you're constantly updated on techniques and specializations beyond your position. There's enough wiggle room to work with even if you're competing against outsourced personnel; some of these use their previous positions as leverage for better offers. You, on the other hand, have nothing to lose by trying.

Most companies consider their in-house personnel as the best candidates for executive positions, so you have everything to gain by anticipating and training for promotion opportunities. You'll have the advantage over your colleagues if you equip for higher positions, even if these are currently taken or unavailable. This also applies to applicants fresh out of college; you'll only be handpicked for the job if you polish your skills and stay relevant.

Finding jobs in HR shouldn't be too challenging if you're prepped for the position. Education, experience, and specialized skill should ensure you're amply qualified for it.
